Prickly Pear
A few days ago I discovered that the cactus, growing behind our house on the edge of the woods, is Prickly-Pear, Florida's native plant, which produces edible fruits: large, fleshy seeded berries.
It first attracted my attention on April 3 when I noticed flower buds (see the photo above).

Easter floral - Tread-Softly (Cnidoscolus stimulosus)

Copyright © 2006 - 2007 Daria Perse. All rights reserved.
Cnidoscolus stimulosus (three photos above) with common name Tread-softly is an extremely attractive Florida native dwarf plant. Its leaves are shaped to look almost like dark green snowflakes. Petals are brilliantly white, they seem velvety soft. The softness ends with the petals, though. The whole plant is covered with long, glass-like, stinging hairs.
Propagation: by seeds.
Size: up to 12 inches tall, clumps usually wider than taller.
Care: prune old stems.
Growing conditions: well-drained to fairly moist sandy spot, full sun. Zones 8-11.
Blooming season: year round in south, spring through summer northward.
